‘My name is Boggem Ramulamma. I am 12 years old, belonging to a poor family of toddy tappers. My father addicted to toddy neglects the family and my mother is the sole bread winner of the family. I have two sisters and two brothers.
When I was young, I learned to help my mother with the domestic chores. I swept floors, washed clothes, and carried water and firewood. I was very happy when I was allowed to go to school. I made new friends there. I learned to read and write. But when I reached the fourth class, my parents stopped my education. My father said there was no money to pay the fees.
When my mother fell ill I was sent to work as daily wage labourer. I spent my days loading and unloading stones from the tractor and sleepless nights caring for my sick mother.
The thrift organisers of SECURE came to know about the condition of my family and admitted my mother in the hospital and gave me admission in the Residential Bridge Center. They also advised my mother to join in the Self Help Group after her recovery in order to save some money for the benefit of the family.
I was soon mainstreamed to the Anantaram School to study in class 7. Through SECURE’s efforts and my hard work, I continue to study well. I am very much thankful to SECURE and Aide et Action for providing me an opportunity to study and be a child again.’
