Tsunami Response Program - India and Sri Lanka

In India “Participatory disaster proofing of tsunami affected target villages” project is being implemented in 80 villages in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu state implemented with 3 local NGO partners and one directly and In Sri Lanka “Participatory disaster proofing of tsunami affected war torn villages” has been implemented in 25 villages with two partners.

Major activities in these two projects are – land/water reclamation, promotion of eco-friendly agriculture and other natural resource management activities, capacity building and organisation of communities for disaster preparedness and mitigation, provision of multi-purpose disaster shelters along with required infrastructure, coastal belt plantations, emergence of schools as eco-centres of villages and introduction of disaster preparedness/mitigation modules in schools and communities etc.

  • 7331.25 acres of tsunami affected land reclaimed
  • 4366 tsunami affected water bodies (drinking, domestic and irrigation use) restored.
  • 9262 farmers trained and adopting sustainable agricultural, animal husbandry and allied practices in 80 target villages
  • 4386 persons’ (including teachers, volunteers and youths) capacities built for disaster preparedness in 80 villages
  • 80 village disaster protection committees formed, strengthened and functional
  • 80 villages community was facilitated to developed village disaster mitigation plan and vulnerability mapping was disseminated.
  • 7500 households were equipped with family disaster mitigation plan. Each family understood evacuation route and have contingency kit in their house.
  • 31 schools was renovated and provided with sanitation facilities, hygiene drinking water, restoration of school building and campus developed. Awareness paintings and IEC materials on disaster preparedness were exhibited that improved the self learning of the children and established as eco centres in the affected areas.
  • 4 modules pertaining to disaster preparedness /mitigation prepared and introduced in schools and communities of 80 villages
  • 20000 special colouring module on disaster preparedness for children was printed and distributed
  • Multipurpose disaster protection shelters provided in 15 villages
  • 40 model villages provided with disaster warning systems, rescue materials and medical kit
