MARI has been implementing the Community development through education project of AeA. AeA has started this project to achieve the goal of universalization of education and contribute to the comprehensive development of rural poor. The project aims at ensuring an enabling environment in schools in terms of infrastructure, teachers and curriculum. It promotes community involvement in education including formation and strengthening of community based institutions of poor and inclusion of marginalized sections in development processes.

Objectives

To ensure the schools in the project area are child friendly with regard to infrastructure, atmosphere, curriculum, teachers and other necessities
To build the capacity of teachers, vidya volunteers, community and project staff
To ensure the disabled people in the project area are given counseling and individual rehabilitation referral services
To ensure atleast 500 youth between the ages 18 -25 are actively trained and assured of livelihood opportunities
To ensure membership of all women in the Self Help Groups and provided with basic education, training and employment opportunities
To make sure that the entire girl children between ages 3-18 have access to quality education, and above 18 have some higher education or income generation
To ensure that all the government schemes and benefits reach the society and are beneficial to everybody concerned

 

Major Accomplishments 2007

10 Pre-schools established in the operational area for  children of 3-5 years
Promoted 57 children to I Std from Pre Schools and enrolled 69 new children in Pre Schools
2 Pre schools converted as anganwadi centers
Training programs organized for Pre School teachers has helped to maintain child friendly atmosphere and improved regularity of children in schools
VEC conducted regular meetings in all 28 villages. Capacities of VECs were built through trainings  resulting in the preparation of school improvement plan, their involvement in school monitoring, increase in the regularity of children to schools, mobilization of resources from government and other sources for school development, identification of CWDs and PWDs and their rehabilitation, employability training for youth etc.
Constructed 2 toilets in Chokla thanda and Kasnathanda with SSA support
Competencies of 316 children assessed by volunteers
Organized RBC for 100 boys and girls
22 youth trained under iLEAD have been placed
62 unemployed youth admitted in iLEAD for 2nd batch
Identified 221 CWDs and PWDs and prepared specific plans for all of them
Conducted assessment camp for disabled covering 98 persons, of which, 72 persons have obtained certificates, 29 have obtained train passes and 26 have obtained bus passes.
5 disabled youth were supported for placements
9 disabled availed of surgery from corporate hospitals (cleft plate-2, ortho -6, tumors -1), 2 children were given physio therapy a tricycle was mobilized from a philanthropist
11 disabled groups were formed and the habit of savings was promoted among members. Bank account was opened for 8 groups
Awareness trainings were conducted for parents, ICDS and Pre School teachers and members of  12 SHGs on disability related issues
Organised 2 health camps in collaboration with Indian Medical Association in schools and GRS Hospitals for disabled. 14 persons were selected for surgery, of which 6 persons were referred to BIRRDs Hospital in Tirupathi
30 SHGs were formed with 366 members
Savings of Rs.1.30 lakhs was made by the SHGs and linkages were established with banks and Rs. 494994/- mobilized as loans
Conducted trainings for SHG members on SHG concept, thrift and credit, fund management, book keeping etc.,

Quality Education 

   
Updation of Village Education Report and school improvement plans in school villages
Training of 56 VEC members for 8 days in school management, monitoring techniques, resource mobilization and preparation of village education reports
Training of pre school volunteers for 6 days on child psychology, methods of teaching Pre School children, types of disability, preparation  of TLM, school maintenance, etc.
Improvement of Pre School sheds in villages
Provision of teaching aids to 10 Pre Schools
Organizing 4 interface meetings with government authorities
Training of field staff on QE related subjects
Improvement of school infrastructure in 10 school villages
Implementation of Back 2 Basics in 28 schools
Introduction of Liberate School concepts - trainings, exposure visits, environment education etc.,
   
   

Livelihood Education

Conducting survey in 28 villages to understand the status of youth
Providing employability training for 300 unemployed youth on market oriented trades
Organizing skill trainings for 100 girls with the support of government schemes
Conducting a study on all the government schemes available for rural poor and establishing linkages
   
   

Inclusive Education 

Updating of data base of disabled and undertaking survey in 28 villages
Developing individual action plans for 100 disabled persons.
Conducting 4 assessment camps to study the issues of disabled and arranging for rehabilitation services
Mobilizing aids and appliances
Implementing early intervention activities
Conducting sensitization programs for teachers, parents, youth and CBO representatives
Formation of 5 SHGs among disabled

Women’s Empowerment and Education  

Formation of 8 new SHGs in the project villages
