Liberate School
Liberate School is an initiative that encourages alternative forms and subjects of learning in rural areas where there is a high dropout rate among school going children. AeA along with its partner organizations conceived of the Liberate School idea in order make learning need-based with the local context in mind. The Liberate School focuses on promoting learning communities in an attempt to reduce dependency points of the communities, and motivate people to empower them to take charge of their learning processes. AeA partners with Lokpanchayat and Yuvamitra in Maharashstra in Ahmednagar and Nasik districts covering 40 villages to implement the Liberate School idea.
Objectives:
- To inculcate an interest in local knowledge and local learning practices
- To encourage a participatory approach within the community and involve them in developing the content and methods of education
- To enable learning that is aimed at obtaining a local common good
Activities:
Maitri Shibir is an activity to strengthen relationships among children and with other members of the community.
The Wall Paper is used to display the creative expressions of children. Children write songs, stories, their experiences and draw on the wall. This wall paper is published once a month in paper form.
Khel Ghar is a learning space where non-competitive games are organized that include drawings, songs, stories and children are encouraged to share their experiences.
Shivar Feri includes an experiential journey where they interact with people involved in different local professions, collect information and reflect on the topic. The information they collect is displayed on the Khel Ghar walls. This activity is designed expressly so the children learn about the village, their surroundings and have the opportunity to explore local forms of knowledge.
