Arumbu Child Development Project  
 
 

Background 

Arumbu Child Development Project is a direct intervention project located in Chennai. The Project carried out in conjunction with the Chennai City Police serves the urban underprivileged populations of the city of Chennai. The project, through its boy’s and girl’s clubs, aims to provide a positive and enabling atmosphere where children from weaker sections of the society are “given equitable and sustainable opportunities for their learning, development and growth.” The project trains children on child rights and leadership, organizes employability training programs through iLEAD, mainstreams drop out children into formal system of education, forms club development committees and promotes the participation of Children With Disabilities (CWD).
 
Goal

Ensure that  children living in slums in Chennai are given equitable and sustainable opportunities for their learning, development and growth.

 
 

Objectives

   
To make the existing boys clubs more meaningful and child friendly
To create equal opportunities for girls through promoting girls clubs
To provide livelihood education and training for youth in slums
To mobilize the participation of community, police department and other stakeholders in the development process
To promote all round development of children with focus on sports, personality development, art, music and cultural activities

Major Accomplishments - 2007

   
Renovation such as painting  of walls and minor repairs was undertaken in 4 Boys Clubs
900 children participated in various sports meets
Celebrations were held during festivals and on Independence Day and Republic Day in all Boys and Girls Clubs
Various health and medical camps were conducted during the course of the year
  Eye camp was organized benefiting 145 children and their parents
  Dental camp was organised  benefiting 85 children and members of the community
  General medical camp was organised with the participation of 300 people
  Assistive devices were provided to Children and Persons With Disabilities
Club specific plan was developed for 34 Boys and Girls Clubs
A learning manual  was developed to improve study habits of children attending board exams and distributed to 10th standard  students
Training in yoga was imparted to 400 children
Awareness and training in Child Rights and Child Line was imparted to 115 children
Training on Health and Hygiene was imparted to 35 adolescent girls
As part of the events conducted during the Global Campaign for Education 2007, around 1000 children participated in a rally  and a street theatre was performed to create awareness among the community on ‘Education as a Human Right’
 

Activities – 2008

Club Development Committees (CDCs)

Formation of 36 Club Development Committees
Strengthening of 68 existing Club Development Committees in Boys and Girls Clubs
Formation of 4 federations among 104 clubs
Conducting workshops and involving government, community and other stake holders in planning club development activities
Leveraging with government and other agencies

 

Child Development

Providing learning opportunities for 74 boys clubs on yoga, cultural activities, sports, Spoken English, indoor games, handicrafts, savings, environment, health education, computer skills, moral education, career guidance etc.,
Capacity building of scout masters on planning child specific activities, enhancing teaching skills, health education and improving documentation skills
Mainstreaming 100 drop out children in regular schools through enrolment campaign and educational support
Conducting 4 medical camps for the children of  Boys Clubs
Formation of 59 ‘Children Parliament’ to promote leadership qualities, and create awareness on educational, social and health issues
Developing saving habits in Boys and Girls Clubs
   
   

Girls Clubs

   
Formation of 13 new girls clubs  through merging of club development centres
Organizing various events related to overall  development of girls by sports, personality development, art, music, cultural activities, computer skills and spoken English
Mainstreaming 50 drop out girls in regular schools
Organizing health education awareness programmes and  medical camps
Establishing linkages with all women police station for 30 girls clubs and other stakeholders
Conducting 2  workshops with Chennai city women police station to support girls club activities
   
   

Inclusive Education 

Preparation of child specific action plan for all identified Children With Disabilities (CWDs)
Availing disability certificates, ID cards, aids and appliances for the needed CWDs
Mainstreaming capable children to regular schools
Conducting training programmes on disability rights to team members, scout masters and tutors
Organizing awareness programmes for parents and community on disability issues
Referring the eligible youth with disabilities to iLEAD centres for employability training
   
   

Livelihood Education

Mobilizing  youth for iLEAD Chennai Centers with the aim of providing training on Information Technology Enabled Services, Automobile Two Wheeler Mechanics and Hospitality
